Sydney, 30 November 2023. The National Narrowband Network Co (NNNCo) has been selected by Water Corporation to be the sole LoRaWAN network provider for the utility’s Digital Metering Program following a multi-stage evaluation process.
The partnership with Water Corporation, through NNNCo’s strategic partner Enzen Australia, will deploy a new smart meter connectivity solution to support the long-term preservation of water in Western Australia.
The deployment will provide the region’s water utility with affordable, high quality network connectivity for more than 5,000 smart meters. It is part of the largest
pilot of its kind in Western Australia which will see Water Corporation install more than 16,000 digital smart water meters at homes and businesses across Perth.
In order to provide deep coverage and 100% connectivity to every water asset without a high capex outlay, NNNCo partnered with Western Power to deploy gateways on lighting and power infrastructure including streetlight poles.
Rob Zagarella, CEO of NNNCo, said: “NNNCo’s LoRaWAN Telco model is coming of age for the water industry, whereby we partner with power utilities with the infrastructure to expand the network on demand as the water utility’s connectivity needs grow.”
“Through NNNCo’s telecommunications carrier license and our commercial agreement with Western Power we have access to the utility’s infrastructure across their service territory in Western Australia. This means our LoRaWAN network can be built close to Water Corporation’s smart meters without needing to access its assets, further reducing cost.”
Dileep Viswanath, CEO of Enzen Australia, said: “Water scarcity is one of the most critical challenges facing communities in Western Australia. Our work will help create a best practice solution that will enable the utility and its consumers to manage this life essential in the most sustainable way. Through our unique portfolio of solutions, Enzen and NNNCo have established themselves as trusted partners for digital transformation across many utilities in Australia.”
Around 250 customers in West Perth have already received a smart meter under the pilot with a wider rollout continuing through to the end of 2023, and more participating suburbs to be announced in early 2024.
As of the end of November 2023 the network is live in Halls Heads, West Perth, Dawesville, Darlington and at the Water Corporation lab Shenton Park.
Following on from Enzen and NNNCo’s IoT Living Lab collaboration with WA electricity network Horizon Power, this latest partnership demonstrates an increasingly influential role NNNCo as the provider of choice for large scale LoRaWAN networks for smart water metering.
